RE: Puppy lullaby

That is one of the sweetest videos! And wouldn't you love to adopt a puppy that has been trained to fall asleep when you sing to it?!

RE: Planning meals for a group camping trip.

With one group, there is a menu and each family prepares part of the menu. However, nobody ever knows the menu until the day of so it is a horrible arrangement. It is very stressful. And some people aren't very good cooks. ;) With another group, we all prepare our own meals but eat together. No stress. I think it would be ideal for each family to prepare their own meat and then potluck the side dishes. That seems the easiest to me but for our group that prepares all their own meals, just getting everyone camping at the same time is enough of a feat! LOL!

RE: Simple Desert

I'm with Yankeeblue! I don't care for cottage cheese. Could you use sour cream? (I know, same thing almost, but at least NO LUMPS!) Has anyone tried sugar-free jello and cool whip? I don't like cottage cheese either and when I make this, I use small curd cottage cheese. It is so fluffly that you really don't realize it is cottage cheese.

RE: Is Ore. Wash, the best on the west coast.

Oregon's coastal state parks are the best. But Washington has some great inland campgrounds on lakes (Mossyrock and Taidnapam). We also like Vista Park in Skamokawa. It's a small, quaint campground right on the Columbia River.

RE: Wakeup times when camping with kids?

...When we're camping, We make them stay in the tent and play or read quietly until at least 7:30 because once they're out, I percieve them as too noisy. They're just normal kids, but at that early hour, it seems like normal conversation seems amplified! And once they're out, there's bound to be the occasional loud voice from one kid to the other!... I went ahead and bolded the OP. The OP isn't saying that they are going to let their kids run around screaming at 7:30 -- just wondering if their kids' "normal conversation" with the "occasional loud voice" is too loud for 7:30. Not to pick on Wayne (really!) but not sure why he is being so literal about this and almost seems to be reading between the lines. Am I missing something here? :?

RE: Wakeup times when camping with kids?

OP here again. When I wrote that I percieve them as too noisy, I was speaking relative to the silence of the morning campground environment, when even footsteps crunching on leaves can be heard by others. I'm not talking about having my kids screaming across the campground, or bouncing a basketball in the road, or shooting bottlerockets. :) (no, we don't shoot bottlerockets when we camp!! I'm just making a point!) I'm talking about normal kid conversation voices, or the sound of bicycle tires on the pavement, or opening the car door to grab some food. I found my answer. If quiet hours are over at 7am, I'm perfectly ok with letting them out of the tent at 7:30. So, if you're a camper who isn't accustomed to child noises at 7:30, and you'll be camping in Ohio State parks, I apologize ahead of time for the inconvenience. I know I've camped near some incredibly inconsiderate people...night-time partiers, loud talkers, loud radio-players, foul-language people, fighting families, people who walk through my site, people who don't supervise thier kids...I try to live by the golden rule, and I have a lot of examples of what not to do. I was just wondering what others thought about the morning issue. Thanks! You beat me to it! I was going to clarify what you meant when you said "too noisy". I know EXACTLY what you mean about small noises being so loud first thing in the morning. ;) We stay up late around the campfire and try to be as quiet as possible but I know there are times when one of us has laughed too loud. We try to camp in busy campgrounds or group camp areas where our noise won't bother those around us. There is no difference between being too loud early in the morning or too loud at night. Just use your best judgment. For the cranky people who don't want to hear a child until 10:00 a.m., I think you need to camp in your driveway only -- unless your neighbors have children.

RE: Wakeup times when camping with kids?

DH and I are up and out of the trailer by 8:00 but our boys are another story. They stay up late chatting and playing cards in their tent so they aren't about to get up before 9:30. DH and I will usually start cooking and breakfast around 9:00 or 9:30 and then start the grueling process of trying to get the boys up. :) I think 7:00 to 7:30 is good. Unless they are right in front of our trailer screaming, we probably won't hear them. ;)

RE: what did you name your dog and why

I wanted to name our newest addition, a lhasapoo (lhasa poodle mix), Lily but my sister nixed that because she wants to name her firstborn daughter Lily. So I went with Libby since it is close. I just had to have a girly name since I am surrounded by men! We call her LibbyLu most of the time (which is a store in Downtown Disney, Anaheim). With our schnauzer, he was such a gentleman that I wanted him to have a regal sounding name so I chose Duncan. Our cats are Cleo and Oliver who were named after Disney characters. In the past, we had parakeets named Pudge and Wilson named after baseball players Pudge Rodriguez (Texas) and Dan Wilson (Seattle). Good luck naming your new puppy!

RE: Potato Patties

My mother also stired in an egg and a little flour. I think it was the bacon grease which made them extra tasty. Doesn't bacon grease make everything extra tasty? ;) I may have to try this next time I make mashed potatoes!

RE: Teen's Summer Job

I dont really think this is teen bashing....all teens in general cant be trusted....has nothing to do with how you raised them....has alot to do with hormones...I have seen teen's raised in great homes and everything done right and turn out bad...I have seen teens raised in crappy homes and no supervision or guidance turn out to be good people .....so go figure....we love our kids and do the best we can...Yes I want my teenager to go camping with us...but sometimes he chooses to stay home...he is a great kid...can I trust him....NOT ON YOUR LIFE.... I agree, gapeachy!

RE: LLahso Apso

Our little Libby is a LhasaPoo mix and she is an exceptional furkid. As she is a mix, my advice has nothing to do with the breed but more about the circumstances the dog you are looking at is coming from. If you get this dog, be prepared to have a LOT of patience and get a lot of help with socialization and training. Cat gave wonderful advice. If you aren't prepared for these potential issues, you could be setting yourself and the dog up for failure. Let us know what you decide!

RE: Please watch your animals while camping or home

Our puppy is 5 months old and has an appointment at the beginning of next month to be spayed. They do NOT need to have a heat cycle before being spayed.

How many quarter pound burgers can fit on the 100 vs. 200? And how many large rib eyes?

RE: Teen's Summer Job

Our almost 19 yo son could care less about camping. He is an "indoor" boy, loves playing video games and can't live without the computer. At his age now, we will just leave him at home if he doesn't want to go. When he was in high school and we left him at home, we came home in the middle of our camping trip to do laundry and found him and two friends sleeping amidst a sea of wine cooler bottles. We woke the boys up and made the cleam up the whole mess. They still had about four 6-packs of wine coolers left so we made them pack them up in our cooler, dropped our son off with his grandmother (the ultimate punishment) and went back to our camping weekend. The other adults we were camping with thanked our son for supplying the booze that weekend! Haha! Needless to say, he didn't get left home alone again for a LONG time. Our 15 yo son is the polar opposite of his brother. He LOVES camping. The only problem we are going to have when he turns 16 is camping close enough that he will be able to drive back and forth to work. You know your child better than anyone else. If they love camping, try to work around their schedule.

RE: Games and other ideas needed.

On our last camping trip, our boys taught us Spoons and BS. Spoons was really fun and a fast moving game. BS is hilarious! We also like to play 31 and Phase 10.

RE: how long did it take to fully housetrain....

Our new puppy is almost 5 months old and hasn't had an accident in the house for a month. However, we never let her have the run of the house when we aren't home. We put her in her crate. When she would start to have an accident in the house, we would give a loud "eh", pick her up and take her outside and tell her "go potty". Since the beginning, we have chanted "go potty" the whole time she was going. Now, she will go on command. All of our previous dogs have potty trained pretty quickly. I think that crate training is the key. Good luck!

RE: Lost our Toby May 30, 2008 (Long)

Your tribute was wonderful and made me sob. In my mind, I can picture Toby fishing and camping with you. What a wonderful dog! We were in the same position several years ago with our 5 year old boxer. She was diagnosed with lymphoma and our vet told us she had 3 to 6 months to live. She lasted a week and we had to put her to sleep. Staying with her was the hardest thing I have done but would never have left her alone. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.
